History of Montgomery County

Montgomery County was once part of a larger Frederick County, Maryland which was split into thirds in 1776.  The northern part was made Washington County, Frederick County remained as the middle portion, and the south eastern portion became what we know today as Montgomery County.

Montgomery County’s namesake is Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War general who began his military career with the British Army.  He then became an elected official in the New York Provisional Congress which was formed by rebels of the British rule.  Montgomery took up the cause of the rebels and fought for the Continental Army as a Brigadier General.  He lead the troops in invading Canada in Fort St Johns, Montreal, and Quebec City in which he was killed in battle.

Richard Montgomery’s body was found by British soldiers and given an honorable burial.  The name of Montgomery County Maryland and many other areas around the country stand in honor of this man who stood on principal against injustice with the ranks of civilian freedom fighters to build a great nation.

Several landmarks throughout the county have been named after General Richard Montgomery, including Richard Montgomery High School located in Rockville, MD.
